Cutaneous malignant melanoma of the head and neck constitutes a unity of melanomas with several characteristics differing from melanoma of other anatomic sites. In the head and neck region, an area subject to more chronic sun exposure than other skin surfaces, melanoma has in some respects a different biological behaviour. Age at diagnosis is higher, the distribution of histogenetic types of melanoma is different and the incidence of melanoma in the face is extraordinarily high.
