| TECHNOLOGY Many technologically advanced devices exist that can help hearing-impaired adults hear to the best of their abilities. They include: Hearing aids Hearing aids are wearable devices that amplify sound for individuals who do not hear well. If you believe you may need a hearing aid, you should be evaluated by a hearing professional. Audiologists are degreed professionals who specialize in the assessment and treatment of hearing related disorders.
Assistive communication devices Assistive communication devices help people to hear better in specific listening situations. For example, they can help you use the telephone, listen to TV, or hear in an auditorium.
Cochlear implants A cochlear implant is a sophisticated medical device that provides sound information and improved communication abilities to individuals with a severe-to-profound hearing loss. A 22 channel device now has FDA approval and is being used by over 2,000 individuals worldwide. To qualify for a cochlear implant, you must have a severe-to-profound loss in both ears and receive little or no benefit from hearing aids.
Many classes exist to help hearing-impaired individuals communicate. They include: Speechreading classes Speechreading classes help people use visual information, as well as their residual hearing, to communicate with others. Sign language classes A variety of sign language classes are available in many communities Auditory training classes Auditory training classes and individualized instruction in listening skills help hearing-impaired individuals learn to use their remaining hearing abilities.
